Centers of Excellence

The Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh has created a unique environment where “centers of excellence” flourish. In this model, neurosurgical subspecialists devote time to research and patient care in focused areas. The use of centers of excellence has strengthened neurosurgery at the University of Pittsburgh and facilitated attainment of our mission.

These centers are:

Brain and Spine Injury Program
Consists of a number of programs developed to better understand and treat the problems associated with traumatic injury to the central nervous system, brain and spinal cord in both adults and children. Learn more >

Comprehensive Cerebrovascular Neurosurgery
Subspecialized multidisciplinary clinical unit which evaluates and treats all forms of vascular disorders of the brain and spinal cord. Learn more >

Center for Clinical Neurophysiology
Provides a wide range of diagnostic and monitoring services designed to investigate and protect the function of the nervous system. The center has expertise in technologies that help diagnose disease, facilitate safe surgery, and monitor ICU patients. Learn more >

Complex Brain Surgery Program
Devoted to the surgical treatment of lesions and tumors located in deep, eloquent or difficult-to-reach regions of the brain. Learn more >

Cranial Base Surgery
The Cranial Base Surgery Center is devoted to providing minimally intrusive neurosurgical procedures and techniques in the treatment of brain and skull base tumors. Learn more >

Cranial Nerve Disorders Program
Specializes in comprehensive approach to disorders of the cranial nerves including trigeminal neuralgia, hemifacial spasm and glossopharyngeal neuralgia. Learn more >

Epilepsy and Movement Disorders Surgery Program
Encompasses the treatment of movement disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and epilepsy specializing in Deep Brain Stimulation. Learn more >

Human Neural Prosthetics Program
Multidisciplinary effort to explore the utilization of brain computer interfaces for improving the lives of patients with motor disabilities. Learn more >

Image-Guided Neurosurgery
Minimally invasive stereotactic radiosurgical procedures featuring the Gamma Knife, treating brain tumors, vascular malformations and other disorders. Learn more >

Neurosurgical Oncology Center
Treats patients with tumors of the nervous system, as well as patients suffering neurological complications of systemic cancer. Learn more >

Pediatric Neurosurgery
Treatment of children with tumors, spinal deformities, cranial malformations, spasticity, and epilepsy, as well as adults with neurological diseases stemming from childhood or congenital conditions. Learn more >
